" War = Recession Proof "

The cost of the Iraq war sky rocketed up to $1 trillion. Congress can do its job by holding President Bush accountable for runaway expenses. Democrats are now in control of the war and have not done much better than the Republicans did in the past. Public opinion and the Constitution are on the side of Democrats willing to demand answers to how the money will be spent and the results to be expected. For this budget, President Bush originally requested $150 billion to fight the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. That was on top of the $460 billion to fund the rest of the Department of Defense. Now the president is back, three weeks after the start of the new fiscal year, demanding another $42 billion, mostly for the Iraq war. By one account it is $42.3 billion and others have it at $46 billion. The difference may involve taking part out of the funds funneled for North Korea, the Palestinians and similar efforts. On one level, the numbers are like the estimates of the weekly cost of the Iraq war. It's $2 billion or $3 billion. The common thread is, every penny is borrowed. Democrats outrage over the Iraq war turns timid in the face of White House rhetoric that their opponents are weak on national defense. Squandering money that does not make the country any safer is hardly resolute leadership. Congress and the Democrats are on safe ground expressing incredulity. They are supposed to defend the treasury from intemperate, profligate executives. They have the weight and authority that go with the power of the purse. Asking tough questions is their duty. The challenge feels awkward because Congress is out of practice. Saying "no" and meaning it is part of the job description.

"Group Project"

My group project is going well. We decided to address the issue of attendance at the women’s volleyball games at the University of Southern Mississippi. Our team is very successful and deserve more support from our fellow student body and the community. We have pitched a proposal to make a youtube video and brochure to inform the public on this issue. We will hopefully get the response we are expecting and help uplift the sprits of the team.
Our group is on schedule and everything is working out as we planned. Schedules to interview members of the volleyball team are in progress. After that point I will cut and edit the video to make it attractive to out target market. Everything has been planned but, still in the process of getting completed. All theses issues will soon be resolved and our project will be coming together.
My group members and I are getting along very well. We all work hard and all strive to have a successful turnout. Working with others is hard, especially in college because we’re all so busy. I is very hard to get all of the members together because we all have other responsibilities outside of English 333. Meeting time often is Friday evenings after six o’clock. We always get have very productive meeting with creative ideas. We have yet to have any problems, which make it easy to accomplish work.
In conclusion, we must put our plan into action and start progressing towards the completion of our project. The construction of the brochure will be the most time consuming. Strategically deciding what to put on our brochure will be critical to the effectiveness. Filming will also take a lot of preparation. If we continue as we have we will be successful. To help us be successful we all as a group have to use our resources to our full extent. We are all very intelligent, talented students and I feel this project will make a difference.

"Skill needed to work in the Sports Industry"

A key component of preparing sport management students for the real world is their progression through a sport management–specific curriculum, more research is beginning to focus on the importance of field experiences in the preparatory process. A field experience can also be known as an internship, practicum, or mentorship, depending on the details of the experience and the preferences of the educational program. The field experience serves as an integral part of sport management programs, providing an opportunity for learning that is not available in the classroom. Challenging internships that allow the student to play an active role in an organization enhance the educational value of the experience to the student. Through them, students have the opportunity to acquire new skills while applying theories learned in the classroom. A student’s confidence will also grow when there is a sense of serving the organization in a positive manner.
While the field of sport management offers lucrative positions that may initially interest students in the industry, the reality is that they must start a sport management career at the ground level. Most of the industry positions for sport management interns are unpaid. Although the primary objective of a field experience is for the student to apply theories learned in the classroom in a professional atmosphere, some educators feel that students are being taken advantage of in non-wage situations. Some professional sport organizations have come under direct fire concerning their overreliance on unpaid interns. However, the labor laws in the United States do not have clear language dealing with unpaid internships.
The sport industry is very competitive, which makes it very challenging to obtain a career.
In order to be a potential candidate for a job you have to possess many skills. There are seven significant skills to keep you ahead of the game in the sports industry: communication skills, experience in sales, computer skills, time management, being a team player, a bachelor's degree, and being passionate about sports. Communication skills is one essential skill that helps you strive in this industry. You need to be able to communicate well with your colleagues and customers. Employers are also looking for people who have excellent writing skills. Experience in sales in sales is a plus in the sports industry. You want to be able to succeed in selling your products to customers. You have to interact with your customers and find out their wants and needs. Also, computer skills are one of the most important skills needed. Today, employers want their employees to be proficient in computer programs. Employers want them to be able to update their websites, use Microsoft Office to write up documents and fill in databases, and carry out presentations with Microsoft PowerPoint. Time management skills are also important. Since this industry is fast paced, you need to prioritize your work and use your time wisely. Being a team player is a vital skill. Many jobs require you to team up with colleagues to get a job done. When you're a member of a team you have to be able to interact with others well. You also need to be able to help each other out and make decisions together. This is how teams succeed. Obtaining a bachelor's degree is a very important part of getting that dream job. Employers want you to be knowledgeable about the business and how it works. It is also helpful to have experience in the field by doing an internship or volunteer work. Being passionate about your job is another skill needed. One of the reasons why people want to get a career in the sports industry is because they like sports. Liking what you do is what keeps you motivated. Since this industry is very fast paced you want to be enthusiastic in what you do. If you have all of these skills and you are passionate about sports, then you are ready to go out there and get that job!

"Memo Editiing"

To: T. Leoni, Manager, Personal Department
From: Donald Pryzblo, Manager, Data Processing Department
Subject: Incorrect payroll checks

Mr. Leoni, recently I have been reviewing the “errors” made in the computer files. Faulty time sheets are a very big problem we are having. Contrary to what you insinuated in our meeting, the majority of these errors were made by clerks in the personal department. I feel the employees in the data processing department should be blamed for the mistakes of others. My fellow employees are correctly copying the invalid time tickets that the personal clerks are preparing. The errors are being made by the staff in your department.
You and I previously discussed requiring computer operators in the data processing department to compare entries against the time sheets. . I feel this task will be very time consuming and pointless for my staff. The clerks in the personal department are miscopying the entries. My employees does not have spare time to correct the errors made by others. Also, I cannot hire additional help to fix this problem. I do feel we can work something out where both staffs take part in the revision. This will save both of us time and money. I encourage you to inform your employees to review their work carefully before giving it to the computer operators. I will also pay close attention to the work of my employees. I hope we can resolve this issues and get the work corrected.
Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns. Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,
Mr. Donald Pryzblo

In this email the first thing I corrected was, stating who the email was to in the message. The first sentence was a fragment. Mr. Pryzvblo used the terms “my people, and your people” to frequently. Employees should be directly stated as staff or employees. He acted as if he owned the people. Also, I changed the tone of the message. I feel he didn’t have much respect for Mr. Leoni the way he was speaking to him. I hope that Mr. Leoni realizes that Mr. Pryzblo cannot have his staff correcting errors that his staff created. Also, that he will realize to practice what he preaches. If they had a meeting about the problem in the past Mr. Leoni should have had more supervision over what his employees have been doing. A part of being a manager is reviewing and monitoring the work of your staff, which obviously wasn’t done in this situation. I hope he realizes he cant put the mistakes of his staff on others. If anyone should be hiring additional help it should be him. Furthermore, Mr. Pryzblo should realize not to sent emails like this. It was strictly stating things that he will not do instead of trying to compromise and work together. I feel Mr. Pryzblo should have took a more professional formal approach when writing this email. I think he took it to personal and wasn’t looking out for the best interest of the company.

"How effective are websites"

An engaging website with information attracting one to join their sports management program is Florida State University. This information is found at (http://www.fsu.edu/~smrmpe/) University of Southern Mississippi’s page is far less engaging than USF. This information can be found at (http://www.usm.edu/southernmissonline/programs/sportmanagement.php). These websites show the effective and not so effective tactics that many universities use when trying to attract students to their program. There are many things that schools can do to draw prospects to join their program. The University of Southern Mississippi fails at this terribly. Florida State University’s website was even useful for students at attending other colleges, such as why to choose sport management and jobs in that field.

The Florida State University expresses that what can be learned from attending their program is what is necessary to make it in the sports management world. The first thing that caught my eye and probably others also was readings on many scholarship opportunities. Also, their program provides one with actually duties in the work force so that they can be experienced and trained for their upcoming job. They have video and comments left by the alumni that express their feelings about what they got out the program and how successful they are now. This implement fascinated me because I got to hear an outside opinion on what others attained from choosing their university over others. In addition, they have blogs that informs you on experiences a student has by networking and internship opportunities by reading. They have lots of picture and present updates on what new and going on in the program. This website expressed concrete information based on profession preparation that attracted me to the page. There is nothing I would change about this website. I enjoyed looking at it and reading all the information provided. It also made me consider attending the program for grad school.

They University of Southern Mississippi’s webpage for sports management is very basic. This site only gives prospects strictly the facts and what is needed while attending the program. The only thing one has to read about on the main page is the purpose of sports management, which is already known by the upcoming student. It contains no interesting facts or statistics about what students have got out of attending their program. This makes the website boring and not interesting to take time to read. The university should try tactics such as FSU did to attract their future prospects. Having a affecting home page would be the start. Also, they should have updates and personal statements from former graduates to express their feeling and tell the outcome of attending this university. It is very vital to have an effective website. Mainly the whole world uses the internet to do everything, especially things relating to school. Without having a website like Florida, Southern Mississippi mites loose the opportunity to attract future students to their program especially those out of state. I feel after looking at both sites that FSU put more time and effort into their website. I feel that if you post the information it should be inspirational and effective to all readers.

What is History...?????

Minoring in History I have had to read several articles dealing with the truth behind what is considered to be history. This was the first step to determine how and why things are like they are now. I have grown to appreciate this term and have learned the importance of finding out the true meaning. The writer in this article is trying to make one understand that history is not just what’s written in a text book, but everyone creates history everyday of their lives. History is the memory of the things said and done. Every man is a historian. “I agree that history includes everything said and done, to a certain extent. The relevance to each individual’s life determines the significance and importance of a certain event. Also, it should only be studied, perhaps, if the event has a certain impact on the person who is studying it. If the action proved to be important to the individual in the present of future, that incident would be a sort of personal history. The type of history that is commonly taught is the less personal kind. History teachers think that this type of national history has more relevance to each person’s life than the more individual events. However, sometimes the personal events are more important and leave a bigger impact on an individual than the national history. In the article one definition, history is defined as “a written count of events, particularly those affecting a nation, institution, science, or art.” I think the definition of History completely counteracts the original quote. In my opinion, if one were to do something that only affected himself, it would still be history. It would not have that big on an impact on the world, but to that person, it could have been very influential. Another definition of history says that it “is a methodical record of important events which concern a community of men.” Once again, my opinion of history does not have to affect a community of men in order for it to be important or significant. Also, history does not have to be written in order for it to be relevant or to have an impact. Even a simple story passed on from generation to generation with clues from the past is a form of history. I agree with the article when it states, “history is simply just the memory of past events.” Every person has a different perspective on occurrences because every person has personal bias and opinions. That is what makes every person individual. Personal prejudice can come from ethcity and background; people from different environments and races tend to things contrarily. Also, age and gender can affect the personal opinions of an individual. History must be taught in order to learn from the mistakes of the past and use them to prevent or repeat occurrences in the present or future. However, there is more to history than what is taught in schools. However, there is more to history than what is taught in schools. To me, anything at all is significant in the past is history.

The Intro. To my Life

Hello my fellow bloggers,

My name is Kristina Quintini. I am 21 years old and was born and raised in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi. I’m mixed with African American and Caucasian so I feel I get the best of both worlds. I recently transfer to the University of Southern Mississippi in the fall of 2008 after receiving an associate degree in business. I am currently classified as a senior. Dancing is my passion. I have danced for nine years and am currently a member of the Dixie Darlings. Being a dancer for the football team, I grew a strong interest in sports. I am majoring in sports and business administration with a minor in marketing. With my degree I plan to someday be a publicist for the NFL.

Throughout my life I have used writing in everyday situations. This technique has been a requirement at my job, school, and contacting friends on a daily bases. Writing is portable and permanent. It makes your thinking visible. For example, writing a letter has helped me when I felt I couldn’t find the right way to tell someone how I felt verbally. Finding a way to express myself without having to physically say anything made it a lot less stressful for me to get through to someone. I have had to write many documents that have been somewhat difficult, but have helped me accomplish everyday tasks. Writing essays, making a resume, writing up legal contracts, and making speeches have all been things that have taken a lot of persistence to accomplish what is required. Writing is not necessarily something I enjoy doing, but it is essential while living in our continuously growing society.
